A robust earthquake struck off the northern Japanese coast, and the Japan Meteorological Company issued a tsunami alert within the area.

The quake registering a preliminary magnitude of seven.5 occurred off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at round 4:53 p.m. (0753 GMT), at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) beneath the ocean floor, the company mentioned.Japan’s NHK public tv mentioned a tsunami of as much as 3 meters (10 toes) may hit the world shortly.
