The Congress and ruling BJP sparred within the Gujarat Meeting on Thursday after the Congress MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani, alleged that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was not convening common conferences of the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) constituted underneath the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Through the query hour of the Price range session of the Meeting,  Mevani alleged that the SMC conferences haven’t been convened as required by the Act and added that he was compelled to file a petition within the Excessive Courtroom the place the state authorities has assured the courtroom that such conferences can be performed regularly.

Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Manisha Vakil contested Mevani’s claims with the dates when such conferences have been convened since 2019, together with the final assembly convened on December 4,2025.  She mentioned that the conferences have been convened as scheduled and went on so as to add that Mevani himself was not current on the assembly.

Mevani countered her saying although the committee contains Dalit and tribal MLAs and MPs, it’s not obligatory for them to attend such conferences. “However, as per the regulation, it’s certainly obligatory for the CM to conduct the assembly,” he mentioned.

At this level, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi intervened, accusing the Congress MLA of elevating the difficulty for “publicity”. “Any further we will even launch the listing of all of the members who’ve attended and those that have been absent in these conferences to make individuals conscious of the actual state of affairs,” Sanghavi said.

This led to a confrontation between Sanghavi and Mevani. Different BJP and Congress MLAs additionally joined the difficulty.

Speaker Shankar Chaudhary intervened and requested Mevani and different MLAs to take their seats.

Later, Cupboard Minister for Protocol Jitubhai Vaghani raised a degree of order, terming Mevani’s behaviour ‘bullying’. Vaghani alleged that regardless of the Speaker’s clear directions and repeated requests, Mevani didn’t abide by guidelines of the Home and known as it an insult to the Home and the Speaker’s Chair. He demanded that care ought to be taken to make sure that such incidents don’t occur once more.

Taking the MLA’s behaviour critically, the Speaker reprimanded Mevani. The Speaker mentioned that it’s extremely inappropriate to not observe the directions and urged him to keep up the dignity of the Home in future.
